| Greener Foundations: Projects to Link Beginning and Environmental Design | |||
| "Classic" SBSE Projects: | |||
| "The Oasis" | ![]() |
This classic project was developed at an early SBSE Retreat. Students are asked to look at issues of thermal comfort, light, materiality, to arrive at a sublime architectonic environment. | link |
| "The Lightbox" | ![]() |
This project asks students to create a relatively small, quick'n'dirty
model; test it on a heliodon for issues of: quality of light, shading,
solar penetration; a general learning experience about light, sun, latitude,
shading, etc. |

| Variations on that Theme: | |||
| "Modern Residential Case Study 'Lightbox' " |
Developed by Terri Boake, this "Lightbox" variation looks at the effects
of shading on a medium density residential neighbourhood. Students are
assigned case studies based upon Sherwood's "Modern Housing Prototypes".
They make models, test them on the helidon, and are asked to address issues
of spacing, overshadowing, orientation, quality of exterior space, exposure
to sun. |

| Greener Foundations Retreat: Project Developments | |||
| "The Smokebox" | ![]() |
Visualizing airflow and ventilation in a building
is tough. This project creates a performance sculpture, that, with the
aid of "smoke" allows students
to experience and understand airflow patterns. Authors: Bruce Haglund, Chris Theis, Jim Wasley, Terri Meyer Boake, B J Smith |

| Candles in a Field | Using a field of lit (birthday) candles, place an object
in the field. Subject to an air flow (fan) and see which candles are put
out. Meant to illustrate air flow around buildings. Authors: Bruce Haglund, Chris Theis, Jim Wasley, Terri Meyer Boake, B J Smith |

| "Thinking Inside the Box" | ![]() |
A unique variation on the classic "lightbox". What does it look like
and feel like to be "inside the box". Construct the box and put your head
inside. Experience orientations, sun angles, view, glare, etc. Authors: Ed Allen, John Reynolds, Adil Sharag-Eldin, Emad Afifi, A. Ogen |

| Elephant Bus Shelter | ![]() |
Using minimal materials construct a shelter for the homeless. Experience
the shelter and come to an intimate understanding of its performance. Project
part 2 is to adapt the design for an elephant bus stop... Authors: Ihab Elzeyadi, Alex Wilson, Nibedita Das, Leslie Bailly, John Powell |
link 1MB |
| "Beyond the Boundaries" | ![]() |
The exercise
sets out to challenge the perception of the assumption of separation
by "boundaries". Using students AS the division, it assists in experiencing,
finding, creating and transforming boundaries. Authors: Mary Guzowski, Judy Theodorson, Jim Sullivan, Michael Zaretsky, Sonal Rashmi |

| The 4 Dimensional Cube | ![]() |
The
project asks students to create and inhabit a small "cube" to begin
to understand inhabitation, construction, found materials and environmental
impacts on space. Authors: Beth Dobson, Philip Mead, Jeff Guggenheim, Dan Goldstein |
link |
| Mapping Thermal Space | ![]() |
The
project asks students to walk blindfolded through a series of pre-arranged
spatial experiences and record their sensations. The idea is to make
a gourmet feast of thermal issues. Blindfolding heightens the other
senses with vision blocked. Authors: David Lee Smith, Mark DeKay, Todd Gabbart, Mini Malhotra, Brenda Pearson, Jerelyn Wilson |

| Falling Water Project | ![]() |
To
understand water and how it gives us mechanical energy, electric
energy, heat; via clay and the potter's wheel. Authors: Tahar Messadi, Leonard Bachman, Simone Medio, Porus Antia, Megan Compton |
link |
| Unfreezing Architecture | ![]() |
This
project asks students to experience a piece of music in the dark.
They are then make a construction or model to compliment the music.
Assessment follows. Authors: Ginger Cartwright, Jim Grady, Diane Davis, Ronda Mohr, Kathy Bevers |

| Sensory Games | ![]() |
This
project asks students to design a small structure in order to highlight
one of the 5 senses. Authors: Ginger Cartwright, Jim Grady, Diane Davis, Ronda Mohr, Kathy Bevers |
