"Sensory Games"

Authors: Ginger Cartwright, Jim Grady, Diane Davis, Ronda Mohr, Kathy Bevers

Goal:

It is necessary for the beginning design student to have a heightened sensory awareness of their environment in order to design more humane environments

Objectives:

  • Analyze a complex situation
  • Develop the ability to design, using a variety of materials, to enhance human experience
  • To communicate non-verbally

Procedures:

  • Budget for materials must be equal to or less than $25
  • The structure must be self supporting
  • The structure must occupy a space that is equal to or less than 2800 in3
  • It should be well crafted and beautiful

Each student is given one sense (i.e. thermal, movement, sight smell, sound). They are sent out into a defined area -- such as campus – to find a heightened sensation. Students return to studio to design and make a construction to re-represent the sensation to classmates

Evaluation:

  • Students must follow the rules
  • Other students should be able to understand the intent of the object
