Architectural Design and Computing and Digital Design
The University of Waterloo School of Architecture invites applications for three tenure track faculty positions, two in Architectural Design and one in Digital Design, at Assistant, Associate or Full Professor levels. The School offers a CACB accredited professional programme of an Honours Bachelor of Architectural Studies followed by a Master of Architecture. The undergraduate degree requires twenty months of cooperative work term experience. At Waterloo architecture is pursued as a form of creative cultural inquiry. Cultural literacy, environmental stewardship, and technological innovation are central to a programme that addresses local, national and international issues through research and experimentation. The School relocated five years ago to facilities in downtown Cambridge, Ontario. We benefit from open, luminous spaces such as classrooms, labs, workshops and offices, a professional art gallery, the Musagetes Architecture Library and Rare Book Room, a film theatre, media centre, print making studio, café and fitness facility. The School has run an international studio in Rome for 30 years. The community (~430 students, 15 support staff, 19 full- + 25 part-time faculty) works in a spirit of fellowship and collaboration, integrated in the local community.

Architectural Design: The 2 successful applicants will teach in Design Studios at the graduate and undergraduate levels, teach core or elective courses in the three theme areas (Cultural History, Environment or Technology) and supervise graduate student research. This versatility is essential as the school offers a full design studio starting in first year, through to the Masters programme. A record of innovative design teaching at university level is essential. Candidates will prove expertise in sustainable design, urban design, and digital technology. All design faculty members must have significant achievement in university teaching and scholarship or creative design activity. Applicants must possess a professional degree in Architecture, with an advanced degree or equivalent experience.

Digital Design: The successful candidate will teach practice and theory at undergraduate and graduate levels in core and elective streams, integrating technology, design, and culture. S/he will have a key role in directing digital design research, and development of technical facilities at the School. The School is currently renewing and expanding its technical facilities, operating an architectural press, and expanding the collaboration with industrial partners from very strong, local high-technology and new media sectors. An advanced education in a field linking design and computing, teaching experience in an architecture or design school at university level, a record of creative design and original research including grants and publications, and professional experience is required. While a doctorate is preferred, Master’s level academic qualifications will be considered when accompanied by significant professional and design achievement and publication.

The Search Committee will begin to consider applications on September 1, 2009 with commencing dates of January 1, or May 1, 2010. Please submit a letter of application outlining the basis for your interest in the position, an abbreviated portfolio including samples of relevant work, a full curriculum vitae, and names and contact information of three potential referees. Selected candidates will be invited to provide additional details for review. Applicants are encouraged to visit the school and consult our web site: www.architecture.uwaterloo.ca
