The Professional Degree offered by the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo is a two degree program. All students must first complete their 4 year Pre-Professional Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Honours Cooperative Degree. This degree includes 5 mandatory 4 month terms of cooperative work experience, accompanied by 4 work reports and one optional work term. All students participate in Coop Education. As of 2007 at least 50% of our students are employed outside of Canada, many working in London, New York and Miami. The balance of employment is typically in the larger Canadian cities, with students working predominantly in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The Co-operative Education & Career Services department at UW assists students in finding employment. Co-op income helps many students to reduce their overall cost of education.
The Honours BAS degree is followed by a nominal one year Master of Architecture Degree, which constitutes the professional finish to our fully accredited program. The focus of our masters degree is the completion of a substantial thesis.
The passing average for the Honours BAS Degree is 70%. The entry average to the Master of Architecture Degree is 75%. We normally accept 70 students into the first year of our undergraduate program. The two degree program is designed with the intention and capacity to allow all of our qualified graduating BAS students priority admission into our Master of Architecture degree program. Students with undergraduate pre-professional four year degrees from other insititutions wishing to apply to our Master of Architecture program will be required to make a special application for consideration, and if accepted, complete a Qualifying Year of study prior to admission to the MArch.
The BAS + MArch Degree that is offered by the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo was awarded a 6 year term of Professional Accreditation by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board as of November 2005.
