mail in portfolios
The following requirements are for applicants that are selected to complete the interview process by mail in.
PLEASE COMPLETE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. Submit a portfolio that contains a variety of examples of creative work that
you have produced. Think carefully about the format of your presentation; you will
need to consider exactly how you present your work given that you will not be able
to explain it to us in person. If you have work that does not fit into a mail-in
document, for example, models or sculptures, you should use photographs, slides,
video or digital images. The portfolio should reflect your personal design or creative
ideas and fully represent the breadth and depth of your creative work. We are
particularly anxious to see what you do on your own.
2. Provide a 500-word written statement that discusses the intentions and motivations of the work in your portfolio. Describe the ways in which your work may have been influenced by, or is a commentary on, your physical, social or cultural environment. In addition we require a seven-minute digital video file of you discussing your work on camera. We are serious about the seven minute maximum time limit, please do not exceed this limit. You must appear in the video. Briefly introduce yourself. Please show and discuss no more than three pieces of your work. You may edit and format as you see fit, but you must appear and speak on camera. Files should be standard formats (.vob .mpg .wmv .avi .mov) presented on a standard CD or DVD.
3. Select a building or public space from your community which you find to be of interest for either its architectural, social or cultural value. Using any combination of drawings, photography and/or text, attempt to convey your understanding of, and appreciation for, its qualities and attributes.
Please be sure that your name is on each item submitted. We will return your portfolio to you once the Admissions Committee has reviewed it, however, you must enclose sufficient postage for the return of your portfolio or the portfolio will be discarded.
In addition, you must also arrange a proctor (at your own expense, if necessary) to supervise the writing of your English précis test. A suitable proctor would be a teacher, guidance counsellor, or an official at an educational institution.
For the précis, your proctor will provide 75 minutes for you to read a passage
of literature and to restate the argument in your own words, reducing its length
by including only what is of primary importance to the point being made. The
idea of a précis is not to provide a review or your opinion about the passage,
but to summarize the key ideas. You should include all the important ideas in
the passage using your words, not the words the author used in the original.
An excellent précis not only rephrases in as few words as possible the
argument and conclusions of the original, but also suggests the style,
tone, or mood of the original passage. For more information click
