awards
This year the occasion was marked by a dinner and reception honouring the students. The awards were presented by Tracey Winton and faculty members.
The School’s Award program began very modestly in the early seventies, and has gradually grown over the years to its present broad spread of awards that recognize achievements in the all the major aspects of the program and in every class, from 1A to the recent graduates. This year there are over thirty different awards. Most of these are monetary prizes but there are also four medals presented to graduating students. The total amount of the prize money awarded this year is just under $13,000.
This money comes from various sources; it is made up from donations mostly from individuals, but also from institutions and companies. The primary source is the Senate Scholarship Fund. This is made up from donations by faculty and staff of the school, and from the university at large, which are matched by the University administration. This year we received just under $7000.
Awards from external sources come from the Ontario Association of Architects, who contribute two awards of $1200 and the Guild Medal, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the American Institute of Architects, the engineering firm of Morden Yolles, and Sweets/McGraw Hill.
Three awards originate with people once involved with the School -- The Jo Beglo Book prize is given by our former liaison librarian, The Energy + Design Award was given by Joe Somfay, a design professor now in private practice, who donated the prize money won in a competition sponsored by Fiberglass Canada.
